EVENT CANCELLED: Google Hash Code comes to Edinburgh Centre for Robotics

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED AND A NEW DATE WILL BE ANNOUNCED SOON...

Edinburgh Centre for Robotics is hosting its own “Google Hash Code Hub” on Thursday 1st March.  The event which is being organised by a small group of female STEM students, led by PhD student Siobhan Duncan, is open to female developers, engineers and tech enthusiasts from all across Edinburgh.

Google Hash Code is a software engineering competition where participants team up, pick a programming language and Google sets an engineering challenge to be solved. We will be offering a team matching service that allows women to join the hub without already having assembled a team. This not only removes barriers to participation, but also creates a sense of community by bringing together women who might not have met each other prior to the event.

The Hash Code event will run from 5:30pm till 10pm in the Robotarium Seminar Room at Heriot-Watt University.

It will be preceded by a talk at 3.30pm by Roboticist Dr Amanda Prorok from the University of Cambridge with the title "Perspectives on a Career in Tech: From Academia to Industry and Back Again".  Dr Prorok will describe her career as a scientist, engineer, and researcher in four different countries, for academic as well as industrial employers. Her talk will take the audience through the experiences that led her to what she is doing today, and the incidents that were pivotal in shaping her career path. Although the lessons learned are personal, her hope is that this story inspires courage - and perhaps the participant's next big leap.

There will be an opportunity for questions and answers at the end of Dr Prorok's talk and further networking with other participants.

This initiative is in partnership with Heriot-Watt Women in STEM and the Heriot-Watt Robotics Society. It is supported by Edinburgh Centre for Robotics and Dr Patricia A. Vargas, Director of the Robotics Lab at HWU and Centre Outreach and Public Engagement Lead, has observed:

“I believe that this is an unmissable opportunity for women to get together and test their coding abilities in a friendly environment, surrounded by female role models like Dr Amanda Prorok. Our Google Hash Code Hub is the only one in Scotland that is aimed at encouraging more women to enter the competition, and it is also the first to run a team matching scheme!”
