Position filled - Mobile inspection units on and under the train
One fully funded 4-year industry sponsored studentship is available in Edinburgh starting September 2018. Sponsorship will be provided by the Rail Safety and Standards Board http://www.rssb.co.uk on behalf of the UK Rail industry. RSSB is a not-for-profit organisation whose purpose is to help its members to continuously improve the level of safety in the rail industry, to drive out unnecessary cost and to improve business performance.
This project aims to develop robotized inspection units that can navigate and manipulate in the confined work spaces typical of in, between and under the seats of a train cab and/or under the train. The typical application for an on-train mobile robot platform is cleaning of the cab and/or inspection of any hazards in the compartment. Typical application for an under-train mobile robot platform is collecting images of interest under the train to be transferred to an operator and/or autonomously inspecting and identifying any faults on the wheels and mobile mechanisms under the train. One of the challenges in this project is to design a mobile platform suitable for confined regions and to equip it with the necessary sensing and vision capability for navigation in the presence of obstacles. A second challenge is to design a manipulator arm compatible with confined region manipulation.
Applicants should have, or expect to obtain one of the following qualifications:
BSc/MSc Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science 1st/70% average or above.
Other engineering, science or mathematical backgrounds studied to a suitably qualified level may also be considered. Strong robotics, mechanical design, sensors and signal processing, computer programming, and software engineering skills are desirable.
This is a fully funded 4-year Home/EU RAS CDT Scholarship covering Home/EU fees and stipend (£14,777 for 2018/19).
